About height percentiles

Enter a height, age, gender, and country, and this tool estimates how that height compares with other people there. The main result compares you with everyone of the same gender in that country, while the same-age line gives a narrower comparison.

It is a useful ballpark, not a medical growth chart. For adults, the curve is held flat after young adulthood, so age-related height loss is not modeled.

FAQ

What does my height percentile mean?

A height percentile shows where your height sits compared with a reference group. For example, if you are in the 70th percentile, you are taller than about 70 out of 100 people in that group.

Who am I being compared with?

The main result compares your height with people of the selected gender in the selected country. The same-age comparison is narrower: it compares you with people of the same age, gender, and country.

Is a higher percentile better?

No. A percentile is not a score or health rating. It simply describes how common a height is within the selected reference population.

How accurate is this height percentile calculator?

It should be a solid estimate for most everyday comparisons. The calculator uses NCD-RisC country, age, and gender height curves, interpolates between yearly ages, and estimates percentiles with an approximately normal height distribution.

The main sources of uncertainty are the reference data, the standard deviation estimate, and normal measurement variation. For comparing yourself with a broad population, that level of precision is usually appropriate.

Why might my result differ from a doctor's growth chart?

Growth charts can use different reference populations, age ranges, smoothing methods, and clinical standards. A doctor's chart may also account for medical context that an online calculator does not have.

Can adults use this calculator?

Yes. Adult results are useful for population comparison. The source height curves stop at young adulthood, so adult ages use a flat adult-height plateau rather than modeling age-related height loss.

Is this medical advice?

No. This is an educational comparison tool. If you have concerns about growth, puberty, nutrition, or a meaningful change in height, a qualified health professional can interpret that with the right context.

How this tool uses the data

I use the NCD-RisC height data for the country, age, and gender reference curves, then interpolate between the yearly age points.

The source height data stops at young adulthood, so adult ages use a flat plateau. Not perfect, but it keeps the calculator useful for adults without pretending to know age-related shrinkage.

The all-country result is weighted with WPP 2024 single-age male/female population counts, so a country with more people in a given age group gives that age group more pull.

Percentiles assume heights are roughly normally distributed around the reference mean. The standard deviation was derived by averaging over multiple papers. Treat the result as a decent estimate, not a medical measurement.
